The House I Want to Build

I have always wanted to build a house by a river or stream. It will have a rectangular verandah running around it, a ‘jhoola’ going back and forth in a corner.

A small compound of latticed bricks will circumvent the house and a tiled path lead to the front steps. The house will open into a lawn, with flower-pots of various hues and sizes on either side of the pathway. There will be roses, shoe-flower, jasmine,  vrukshi in scarlet red and frangipani flowers spreading an unobtrusive fragrance. A flame of the forest will scatter its flowers on the open verandah.

The house will be built of mud and exposed bricks with terracotta tiling for roof and floor. No windows but perforated spaces will allow natural light and air to flow in freely. Metal steps will spiral up to the terrace, from where you can look down to  the water body below.

You will enter a hall 20’ x 20’ leading to a small dining space. A few wooden chairs, a glass-topped table with four chairs will suffice for the living and dining area combine. The latter will seamlessly flow into a kitchen, with counters  on three sides, fitted with all the perquisites of a modern kitchen–a gas stove and ignition stove, a mixer, a grinder, microwave oven, and not to forget an exhaust fan. One of the walls will have an inbuilt pooja cove. Provision will be made for  storage and gas cylinder, ditto a steel sink with space for drying. A utility area will adjoin the kitchen. A medium-sized fridge will be plugged in the dining area.

One end of the hall will lead to a bedroom 20’ x 15’ to be furnished with a cot, a study table and chair. Books will be arranged in a medium height shelf running along one wall, with wide wardrobes built into the opposite wall. An eco air-conditioner  will cool the room on hot summer days.

I will take you to the bath & toilet area. Here convenience and luxury will co-exist. There will be an exclusive shower area, and another with a toilet, shower cubicle and a jaccuzi. The walls will be cladded with light blue Italian marble, and the floors  with antiskid tiles of a pleasant cream. A wash basin of luxury fittings will be fitted onto the wall, and you can see yourself on an oval Belgian mirror, as you brush your teeth.

Toiletries and other necessities will be kept in a wooden cabinet below the wash basin, with shuttered doors to let in air. Frosted glass to run between the wet and dry areas.

This is my dream house. Will I ever get to build one?
